      Swing Into Jazz Week

MARION, Ma. -- It's a double shot of jazz from New Orleans "hot" to Miles Davis "cool" when New Bedford singer-songwriter Susan Lainey teams with the SouthCoast's Third Shift Jazz Saturday 7:30 p.m. May 7 at the Marion Art Center.

The special performance is a part of Jazz Week organized each year by JazzBoston to highlight jazz in its many forms throughout the metropolitan Boston area.

Velvety-voiced Lainey, a talented vocal and instrumentalist, is known throughout southeastern Massachusetts for her versatile performances and enthusiasm for all types of music from folk to rock and roll. Her 30-plus year music career began in the 1970s when she toured with several bands including Silverado and The Home Brew Band, the latter having performed at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York.

More recently, Lainey's original music won critical praise on the release of her debut CD and was used in the television series "Nip Tuck."

In 1995, Lainey formed her own business, In-Tune Consulting, which provides music programs for over 50 health facilities in the SouthCoast area. She also performs at private gatherings including weddings, anniversaries, wedding and baby showers, memorial services and dedications.

Third Shift, led by Marion guitarist Mark Brown, performs a variety of jazz styles from New Orleans traditional to Frank Sinatra to modern jazz. The group is also known for its popular "Totally Frank" performances based on the life and music of Old Blue Eyes.

In 2010 the band was honored to perform with nationally renowned jazz guitarist Gerry Beaudoin.

Members of Third Shift include Bob Flaherty, drums; Paul Peterson, sax-flute; Hiatt Knapp, bass, and Rick Foster vocals/trumpet.

Tickets for the Marion Arts Center's Jazz Week event are $20. For more information and to order, call 508-748-1206 or visit www.marionartcenter.org.
